Located just north of
Asheville about 12 miles,
Weaverville is a small vibrant community that was incorporated
in 1874. Weaverville was the birthplace of Zebulon T. Vance, Civil
War governor of North Carolina in 1862-65 and 1877-79, who was born
in the nearby Reems Creek
Valley. His birthplace, the
Zebulon B. Vance Birthplace,
is a state historical site and certainly worth a visit if you are
interested in North Carolina history and historical sites.
Weaverville in the 1800s was home to a number of
grand hotels, all now gone. These included the Dula Springs Hotel
and Blackberry Lodge, where Low Country visitors came to escape the
heat of South Carolina summers. These destination hotels, as well as
Weaverville's natural charm and mountain beauty, helped solidify the
town's reputation as a resort destination. This continues to this
day, although Weaverville as a destination is greatly overshadowed
by nearby Asheville.
The town has a lovely park, Lake Louise Park, and a
number of excellent restaurants and places to stay, including some
world-class bed and breakfasts. The Reems Creek Valley, to the east
of the town center, is considered one of the most scenic valleys in
the greater Asheville area. Weaverville also has the distinction of
being named a Tree City USA every year since 1990.
Weaverville is home
to many residents who work in nearby Asheville but also is hostsa
number of manufacturing businesses, including a branch of Arvato
Digital Services, the world's second-largest
replicator of CD's and DVD's.
